Scaling AI across an organisation: seven things that matter
Today I came across a rather funny tweet with memes about AI adoption in enterprise organisations. Very funny and true to life at the same time. The only thing missing was something like “we created a wall of shame where we post the employees with the lowest use of AI tools”.
To make this post useful after all, I’ll share a talk with a much saner approach to scaling an AI strategy across an organisation. I’ve had a very similar experience with several organisations, so the talk really resonates with me. The key points, in order of importance:
-
A clear AI strategy at the organisation level. Worded so that any employee can explain it.
-
Support from the company’s leadership. Integration with the organisation’s overall strategy or OKRs.
-
Diversity in AI tools and room for experiments. Simple, clear guidelines on which tools are available.
-
Basic training for all employees. People should share the same understanding of what they use and which tools help with which tasks.
-
Growing your own internal “AI champions” and supporting them. Highlighting positive examples across the organisation.
-
Internal local communities at the level of teams or products. Small, united by a shared context.
-
Honest, transparent measurement of results against the goals set in the strategy. No metrics for the sake of metrics; tie them to measurable goals.
